CHAPTER SEVEN
Kiss angerly asks why the werewolf cares. Vale replies that did it never occur to Kiss that tonight is a crescent moon and werewolves only appear on a full moon. Years ago the council put an enchantment on Vale to become a werewolf not only on a full moon, but all the time. Perhaps this powerful herb can make Vale appear in human form again, if Kiss could manage her spells. The sister witches join the ghosts flying overhead. The werewolf implores Kiss to try and change the cat again.
Kiss shakes her head. No. Can't Vale see that using magic to make things right isn't working! Things are getting worse. Change has to be real, not an illusion. (The novel goes to full color in the art.)
Kiss says she is removing the spells she placed on Fugley. She will face the council and tell them she's keeping Fugley they way he is.
Kiss tosses the last of the illicit herb into the forest behind her. Vale howls. Kiss faces an angry Vale holding the hairless cat. Kiss weaves a powerful incantation that brings on a storm.

Needs must break with tradition.
Flashes of green lightning leave Kiss unable to see. When the flashing stops, Kiss is surprised to see Vale in human form—as a girl. Kiss looks down at an ancient orange cat collapsing against her leg. The cat has bones as fragile as twigs and makes a cracked mewing sound. Kiss picks up the cat. Kiss tells Fugley she is sorry, that nothing she has done to save him has worked.
